PRAXXIS ATELIER AND BA ARCHITECTURE

1st September 2024-28th February 2025

Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1200 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.

The School is characterised by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice and responsibility. These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research led teaching, impressive and relevant research outputs (84% of research activity is world-leading or internationally excellent), and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to architecture and their careers thereafter. Imagination, we take it seriously! The School was responsible for 3 of the 9 impact case studies returned with Art & Design in the last REF, namely; “A neighbourhood model for age-friendly policy and practice: engaged design and research for urban ageing”, “Heritage action: discovering, preserving and celebrating post-war modern architecture”, and “Complex sustainable futures: disruptive technologies in urban transformation”.

PRAXXIS is a female-led vertical teaching atelier which includes students from BA3 and both years of the M.Arch. We explore and ask questions as to what feminist architecture might be now and in the future. By using the lens of intersectional feminism, we explore inequalities and inequities in society and what that may mean for the built and digital environments. We work to two core principals the personal and the political the often-heard feminist slogan, suggesting a connection between an individual experience and the wider social or political structures. We see our studio as both a safe and brave space for the projects to emerge. A space to talk. A space to share. A space for the voices of others. A space to engage with others. A space to mentor. A space to be feminist. A space to tell stories. A space to question. A space to discuss what is not discussed. A space to look outside of ourselves. The role will be based in the M.Arch cohort and is taught on a Friday.

Alongside this, the other teaching aspect of the role is to teach BA1 Architecture studio on a Monday. The half day which makes up the role is reserved for academic administration and is ideally undertaken on a half day on Wednesday.

Previous teaching experience is essential as the role will be fast-moving and the ability to slot into different environments and challenges will be paramount. This is therefore an exciting role for someone who thrives on variety and who has a collegiate approach to working.

You will have exceptional inter-personal and communication qualities, excellent organisational and administrative skills, and a “can do” attitude. We will also look to you to ensure an excellent student experience using relevant and inspiring learning and teaching.

This post is 18.5 hours a week and so will not support a visa application. Only candidates with the right to work in the UK should apply.

To apply, please submit your CV and Covering Letter via our application portal. Informal discussions can be held with Head of School Professor Kevin Singh via k.singh@mmu.ac.uk.
