MRC Unit The Gambia (MRCG) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a leading research centre in sub-Saharan Africa. Research is carried out by three major Research Themes (Disease Control & Elimination; Vaccines & Immunity; and Nutrition & Planetary Health) that benefit from the core‐supported strategic platforms and of the research services. Disease Control & Elimination investigates the interactions between hosts, pathogens and vectors; and evaluates interventions aimed at interrupting transmission and/or reducing the burden of diseases.

MRCG is a faculty of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health whose mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

The Head of Research Support Office will be responsible for the delivery of an efficient, professional, customer-focused grant submission process and post-award grant implementation support which includes developing a resource of expertise and excellence that ensures researchers receive appropriate guidance and support for successful applications, research outcome and impact. The post holder will work closely with the research contracts team to ensure that terms negotiated for research contracts supports compliance to regulatory requirements and limits Unit’s risk liabilities, ensuring that effective systems are in place for collecting and reporting research performance across the Unit.

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in a relevant field with professional qualification, plus significant and successful experience in research and programme management.  Strong record of delivering value and benefit through process mapping and improvement programmes, policies, procedures and leading on end-to-end grant management, excellent programme coordination, project management and time management skills are also key requirements.

The appointment will be up to 31st March 2027 initially and will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

The salary will be paid in Grade 2a of MRCG at LSHTM’s payscale at a minimum net monthly salary of 93,787 Dalasi. This converts to a minimum take home pay of $1, 055.56 approximately per month using the prevailing Dalasi/USD exchange rate.

Please note that the salary will be paid in Dalasi and that the USD figure quoted is only given as a guide.

For displaced staff the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, displacement allowance for spouse and children, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects.
