Job summary

The Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication (CLCC) at Imperial College London is seeking a Part Time Teaching Fellow in German. You will join an established team of staff delivering German modules to undergraduate students from scientific, technical and medical backgrounds on our Horizons and I-Explore Programmes.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • In-person teaching of the required syllabus using the prescribed textbook(s).
  • Preparing classes, including lesson plans, and collaborating on design and provision of additional shared teaching materials.
  • Updating module information and class materials on the Centre’s VLE as required.
  • Monitoring and recording students’ attendance and progress. Liaising with the Coordinator and administration on student-related issues.
  • Setting, collecting and marking homework and coursework, providing feedback within published deadlines.
  • Assisting colleagues regarding design of coursework and examinations.
  • Invigilating tests, conducting and marking oral examinations, marking examination scripts of own students, and recording marks appropriately.
  • Where required, acting as second marker for written and oral examinations as instructed by the coordinator).
  • Supporting and advising students as required and responding to emails in a timely manner.
  • Working under direction from the German Coordinator in contributing to the delivery of a teaching programme and planning own teaching.
  • Liaising and communicating regularly with the Coordinator, administrators, and across the German team.
  • Attending sectional and departmental meetings as needed (department and/or team briefings, language team meetings, moderation meetings etc)

Essential requirements

You will have:

  • A first degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject area, e.g. Modern Languages Literature / Translation / Applied Linguistics, German as a foreign language.
  • Extensive experience of teaching German as a Foreign Language.
  • A track record of teaching German in the UK at university level.
  • Awareness of current trends in MFL / German as a Foreign Language learning and teaching, familiarity with the CEFR and with different levels of attainment in UK education.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English and German, and ability to convey information clearly and in an engaging way. Demonstrable native or near-native competence in both languages.
  • Excellent IT skills, with a particular focus on Microsoft Office 365 Suite, Blackboard Learn or similar VLEs.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to demonstrate good time management, organisational skills, and a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team in an open-minded and cooperative manner
  • Ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with others.
  • Demonstrable ability to take initiative, prioritise efficiently and work autonomously.
  • Willingness to undertake any training necessary for this role.

This is a part time post, with variable hours agreed annually, based on student demand. Teaching on our undergraduate modules usually takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 4:00pm and 6:00pm.

This role requires the post-holder’s attendance on campus. The successful candidate will need to carry out a range of duties including on non-teaching days and in the university vacation period.
