The School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh is currently inviting applications for a Research Associate in verification and benchmarking of quantum computing.

The Opportunity:

The School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh is currently inviting applications for a Research Associate in verification and benchmarking of quantum computing. This role is to be a part of the Quantum Software Lab (QSL, link: https://www.quantumsoftwarelab.com), in collaboration with the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC, link: https://www.nqcc.co.uk). The purpose is to enhance the research capabilities of our team, known for its high-quality research in quantum informatics at the University of Edinburgh. The QSL currently comprises approximately 40 core members, including eight permanent staff, under the leadership of Prof. Elham Kashefi, Personal Chair in Quantum Computing and the Chief Scientist at the NQCC.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week). We strongly encourage applications from female researchers, minority ethnic groups, first generation academics/STEM and other underrepresented groups in academia. The post holder will have a broad knowledge of benchmarking and verification techniques and a deep understanding of which methods are suitable for different modalities of quantum devices. By applying this knowledge at the Quantum Software Laboratory (QSL), they will engage in current and prospective research projects, either independently or in collaboration with other team members.

Your skills and attributes for success: 

  • PhD (or near completion) in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong background in quantum information or quantum computation.
  • A track record of first-author and collaborative publications in high-quality journals or conferences
  • Proven expertise in the techniques needed to undertake research in benchmarking and verification of quantum computation.
  • Experience in working collaboratively with hardware teams to tailor benchmarking techniques to specific devices.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, both orally and in writing.
