Postdoctoral Research Assistant (FOREUM)

About the role

We are recruiting an enthusiastic post-doctoral research fellow to study the molecular mechanisms of pain in rheumatic disease, in collaboration with centres in the Netherlands and in France. The programme is based at the William Harvey Research Institute.

About you

The candidate will have a PhD in the musculoskeletal field and, ideally, expertise in the area of arthritis (e.g. inflammatory arthritis, osteoarthritis, pain physiology or a related area). Experience with pain behaviour assays and/or osteoarthritis models are desirable. The candidate will be strongly supported to build research fellowship applications and continue to foster the collaboration with the European partners. The candidate should have a good track record of publishing in the field, interpersonal and communication skills, and should be an enthusiastic team player.

About the research group and Centre

The Sensory Neurophysiology group is led by Professor Shafaq Sikandar, and this project is being led jointly with Professors Costantino Pitzalis, Francesco Dell’Accio and Myles Lewis in the Centre for Experimental Medicine and Rheumatology. International project leads are Professor Moqrich (IBDM Marseille, France) and Professor Eijkelkamp (UMC Utrecht, Netherlands). Research within the Sensory Neurophysiology group is focused on understanding neuronal mechanisms underlying the transition from acute to chronic pain, with a specific focus on musculoskeletal diseases. Within the group at large, there is a wealth of expertise in animal models, neurophysiology and molecular biology of pain and somatosensation. Our group thrives on a very strong and welcoming team ethos that fosters synergies and mutual support between the individual members.

The Centre for Experimental Medicine and Rheumatology offers state of the art laboratories and is in the heart of the City of London. The Centre is integrated in the Rheumatology department at Barts and the London NHS Trust offering unique translational opportunities.
