Job Summary

The cardiovascular proteomics research group (www.vascular-proteomics.com), lead by Professor Manuel Mayr, has established a new laboratory at the Sir Michael Uren Hub at the Imperial White City Campus. Prof Mayr’s group has extensive experience in proteomics and state-of-the art mass spectrometry equipment.

Our research spans a variety of wet and dry lab activities, with a focus on proteomics. In this role, you will work closely with our proteomics specialists, providing technical services such as preparation of mass spectrometry compatible samples as well as molecular and cell biology experiment support.

You will deliver high quality technical support and assist with laboratory research activities. Responsibilities include ensuring the smooth running of the lab by maintaining cleanliness and sustainability, producing sterile preparations, servicing and maintaining equipment, managing chemical and stock supplies, and ensuring compliance with health and safety procedures as directed by the department.

A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to scientific tasks that support experimental research, such as aseptic tissue and cell culture, and working with the mass spectrometry team. The remainder of your time will be spent supporting molecular and cellular biology experiments and participating in other projects and activities as required.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Understand laboratory users’ needs and adapt to changing priorities. Provide expert advice and support across a range of techniques and assays, such as proteomics or tissue and cell culture, ensuring high standards and compliance with safety practices of the College/Division/Institute and to established protocols.
  • Ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the labs, including ordering, equipment and resource management, and compliance with regulations regarding biohazards, tissue use, and GCLP, while maintaining all relevant documentation.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of projects and the methods employed.
  • Liaise with colleagues and students at all levels within the section, establishing and building internal contacts, participating in internal networks to exchange information, and forming relationships for future collaboration.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to staff and students.
  • Attend relevant meetings, including those with collaborators, and actively engage in required workshops and trainings, i.e. safety courses.
  • Have knowledge of the environmental impacts of laboratory work and demonstrate an interest in reducing negative impacts.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of a 2:1 Bachelor Degree or equivalent qualification in Biological Sciences or related field
  • Proven experience and strong understanding of methodologies and techniques by previous work in a relevant technical or scientific role in either:
  1. Mass Spectrometry
  2. Omics-data analysis
  • Laboratory Management: Experience in ordering, maintaining laboratory logs and proficient data management
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Working knowledge, understanding and compliance with Laboratory Health and Safety Regulations (COSHH, GMO (contained use), etc.) pertinent to the work area
