About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to join our dynamic team and work at the forefront of computational pathology and biomedical data analysis. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a multidisciplinary collaboration with teams from different institutions including Oxford, Cambridge, and UCL.

What You'll Do: 

  • Develop and implement cutting-edge deep learning techniques involving graph neural networks, transformers, or foundation models including images, gene expression data, and drug structures.
  • Design bespoke algorithms for analysing large biomedical data sets
  • Integrate diverse data types using multi-modal deep learning.

Who We're Looking For: 

  • A computer science or engineering background with a keen interest in biomedical and cancer research.
  • A strong background in deep learning and/or biomedical data analysis.
  • Experience in bioinformatics, database management, or data visualization is desirable

This is a full time post and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31/10/2025.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • Have PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or another related area.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python.
  • Excellent communication and team working skills, both written and oral, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.
  • Ability to manage own academic research and associated activities
  • Ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation

Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in working with drug data including gene therapies and chemical structures
  • Experience in dealing with large image data and cloud computing
  • Strong interest in biomedical applications.  
  • Experience in large-scale image-based phenotyping in the wider sense.
  • Experience of building modern database systems
