The Role

Maynooth University is committed to a strategy in which the primary University goals of excellent research and scholarship and outstanding education are interlinked and equally valued.

The Department of Psychology is seeking two excellent academics to join our staff team as Assistant Professors/Lecturers in Psychology for a period of 5 years to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and course administration activities in the department.

The successful candidates will be asked to contribute to core teaching, research, and administrative tasks in line with the typical staff workload within the department.

The ideal candidates will have a strong track record of research and publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals appropriate to career stage and is expected to carry out research and outreach activities that are in line with the four main research themes outlined below:

  • Rehabilitation, Disability & Health Psychology
  • Mental Health, Community & Positive Psychology
  • Neuroscience, Behaviour & Cognition
  • Organisations, Systems and Policy

In addition to these themes the Department has also been developing an interest in the areas of sport and exercise, and environmental and sustainability psychology.

The successful candidates will also be expected to make a substantial contribution to teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the department which may include teaching in the areas of qualitative and quantitative research methods, lifespan development, individual differences, social psychology, cognitive psychology, mental health, or other core topics depending on background and expertise. Experience at running undergraduate and post-graduate modules/courses would be an advantage. 

The appointees will be expected to build a strong research profile that supports the University’s research strategy, including affiliating to the Research Institutes where appropriate, and working with colleagues on national and international research. The appointees will also be expected to sustain and conduct research, engage in scholarship of quality and substance and generate publications of international standard.

The ideal candidate will have:

Essential

  • A PhD in Psychology or cognate discipline.
  • A record of scholarly work and publication of international quality demonstrating potential to become a significant contributor in their field;
  • Experience in conducting independent research projects with demonstrated skill in the use of appropriate methods;
  • Knowledge of appropriate research funding avenues relevant to the field.
  • A strong academic record in teaching and research relative to career stage; Strong communication, organisational, administrative and teamwork skills.

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching at postgraduate level;
  • Evidence of having attracted research funding would be an advantage;
  • Experience in supervising graduate research students.

A key role of one of these posts will be to assist the head of department and course director in the coordination of our MSc in Environmental Psychology. A background in environmental psychology, sustainability, or cognate area of expertise and or research would be beneficial, but not essential.
