The Ashmolean Museum

The Museum is a part of the Oxford University Museums Group and houses the University’s collections of art and archaeology together with objects and works owned by other bodies and loaned to it. The collections themselves are of world significance. These are used for teaching and research purposes both within the University and in the worldwide academic and research communities. Above all, the Ashmolean is a great public Museum, open to all without charge.

The role

You will work as an Apprentice Maintenance Technician (Electrical) within the Ashmolean Museum Facilities Team, who are responsible for the Facilities Management (Hard and Soft-FM) of the museum’s estate comprising of four buildings within Oxford. You will be required to complete a training programme that will cover all aspects of the role and will be delivered through in-house training, as well as day-release to college. You will complete a Level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship which is within the Construction and Built Environment sector and gain a Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification, (Installation/Maintenance). College attendance and successful completion of these studies is an essential requirement of this Apprenticeship.

Reporting to the Facilities Maintenance Manager, alongside the apprenticeship you will assist in conducting Hard-FM tasks such as responding to building emergencies and the carrying out of pre-planned and reactive maintenance. You will also assist with basic repairs to showcases, audio visual equipment and gallery lighting. Due to the nature of the role and the museum environment, self-motivation and good communication skills are essential to establish good working relationship within the team, across the museum, with the University Estates Services and external specialist contractors. You will receive support through participating in 1:1’s with the Facilities Maintenance Manager and attending weekly team meetings/tool box talks.

You will be educated to GCSE standard (English and Maths grade 4/C or above) or equivalent. You will have the ability to communicate clearly and accurately, be able to demonstrate an aptitude for the skills taught in the Apprenticeship (for example through work experience, qualifications or references). IT skills with experience of Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel) is essential.

This is a full-time position working 36.5 hours per week. You will be required to complete a 3 ½ year apprenticeship training programme as part of a fixed term 4 year employment contract. Please note that applicants who have significant electrical maintenance or installation experience (or who hold electrical qualifications already) may not be eligible for this apprenticeship. 

Due to the nature of this post, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a DBS check.
