About the role

The Institute seek to appoint a Clinical Skills Laboratory Technician to assist the Skills Laboratory manager in providing teaching and technical support to staff and students within the Institute of Dentistry to contribute to an outstanding student learning experience. 

The post is part time (indefinite) 3 days a week including Monday and Thursday.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Setting up and clearing away of clinical equipment
  • Preparation for specific timetabled skills sessions, practical assessments and examinations   
  • Restocking/stock take   
  • Preparation of mannequins, dental models, and plaster models  
  • Moving and handling equipment
  • Assisting academic staff during practical sessions.  
  • Assisting in upkeep and maintenance of clinical equipment including regular cleaning, general housekeeping and fault reporting.
  • Assisting with events and functions 
  • Radiography for students (after training/ in line with rules and regulations) 
  • Using and maintaining the tissue bank (after training/ in line with rules and regulations) 
  • Undertaking statutory and mandatory training
  • Professional and appropriate communication 
  • Compliance with the College’s/Trust’s policies and procedures in relation to confidentiality, health and safety at work, COSHH regulations, infection control, local safety rules.
  • In the Laboratory Manager’s absence, to be aware of and accommodate the teaching needs of the students in the lab.
  • Work on own initiative (refer to more senior colleagues when necessary).

About you

The successful applicant will have an academic/vocational qualification (GCSE, NVQ, City & Guilds) OR the equivalent in experience, be able to relate to and provide courteous assistance to academics, researchers, students and other technicians, have excellent interpersonal skills including written and oral communication, work on own initiative and as part of a team and have a flexible and professional attitude.

Good organisational, planning, numerical skills and computer literacy, including word, PowerPoint and spreadsheets are essential.

Desirable qualities include previous experience of health and safety regulations, working in a dental team or lab, with knowledge of set up and consumables an advantage.
