The Big Data Technologies and Innovation Laboratory at the University of Hertfordshire is working with industry and academic partners on an Innovate UK funded project, Arvast, which aims to use digital means to improve modern methods of construction (MMC). The Data Engineer will support the research carried out by Big Data Technologies and Innovation Laboratory on multiple funded project including ARVAST. minimising the need for repeated training and supporting the elimination of error using augmented-reality (AR) in conjunction with deep-learning algorithms, video analytics, big data analytics, natural language processing (NLP) and cloud computing. The solution will be provided through AR-glasses which have transparent lenses that allows the user to see the real world; with a hologram transparent animated demo video of the production/manufacture instruction overlaid on the real world on one lens.
Main duties and responsibilities:
You will be required to support the design and implementation of data architectures with the use of data technologies and tools. This will involve the development of data models and schemas to support project requirements, collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, troubleshooting and debugging issues whilst maintaining clear and concise documentation for data quality and system performance purposes. You will be responsible for timely completion and presentation of results at seminars and conferences.
Skills & experience
You will have substantial proven experience in data engineering, including building data pipelines and working with big data technologies such as Apache Spark, Kafka and Hadoop. You will have gained experience in designing and implementing data architectures including data lakes, data warehouses, and data marts. You should have a strong background in data modelling techniques (e.g. relational, dimensional, NoSQL) and defining data structure. You should possess good level of skill with data integration techniques (ETL/ELT) across multiple data sources. You must have a clear understanding of big data concepts, distributed systems and data scaling requirements, alongside solid programming skills in Python, Scala and Java. Expertise in the use of data processing frameworks and tools and the ability to design, build and improve data pipelines is essential.
Qualifications required
Educated with a minimum of a Degree or professional qualification in a construction, computing or a related course.
