About the role

We are seeking an outstanding Research Assistant to join the Sustainable and Intelligent Manufacturing team at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. You will join a diverse team of researchers with a focus on sustainability, advanced machining, manufacturing system modelling, additive manufacturing and digital technologies.

In this interdisciplinary project, you will work alongside researchers from three top UK Universities and collaborate with world-leading industrial partners to design and produce new methods and technologies for improving precision in machining high value products. The aim is to design sophisticated machine learning models and smart systems comprising of hardware and software for precision manufacturing. You will have access to state-of-the-art sensor systems for data collection and training machine learning models for detecting and predicting various behaviours in precision machining.

This is an excellent opportunity to apply your engineering and analytical skills and gain invaluable experience in a highly innovative project in collaboration with leading UK and international industrial partners.

About you

We welcome applicants with a diverse background and experiences who can show that they can add value to this project.

You need to be able to demonstrate your competency in two or more of the following:

  • Familiarity with machining processes
  • CAD and design for 3D printing/additive manufacturing
  • Data Acquisition using National Instrument DAQs and microcontrollers
  • Programming in Matlab/Python
  • Deep learning methods such as GANs, CNN, LSTM
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

Appropriate support and training will be provided for the successful candidate.

You will join a diverse team of Postdoctoral and PhD researchers at the Sustainable and Intelligent Manufacturing team within the Digital, Manufacturing and Design Centre at the Faculty of Engineering and Design. The academics in the Centre are leading in the field of Manufacturing and Digitalisation with extensive links to the industry and academia.
