We are looking to appoint a new lecturer to help drive the course vision of situating itself in the foreground of contemporary architectural discourse.  Areas of specialisation within the department include Design Justice and Spatial Politics, Retrofit and Reuse, Circular Economies, Urban Ecology, and Technologically Driven Design. 

Your role will be principally supporting the delivery of Integrated Foundation year, which is an integrated pathway to our Product Design, Architecture, and Interior Architecture degrees.  You will be working with colleagues from across the subject area during the foundation year supports students in developing the confidence, design skills and portfolio of work needed to study at the degree level.  It provides a transition for students to learn in a creative and inclusive studio environment.

Your new role will present significant opportunities for training, including teaching qualifications (if needed) and career progression through leadership opportunities.  Brighton's Architecture and Design courses are well established and have a history of excellence in industry-focused design education, producing award-winning graduates. 

You will be expected to engage with colleagues to support ongoing course development, course administration, student recruitment, and other duties as required to fulfil your role successfully.  Applicants should have a good understanding of current developments in architecture and design area.  An awareness of contemporary architectural theory and practice - including emerging modes of design practice, interdisciplinary collaboration is essential, and digital competencies (e.g. AI, digital fabrication, AR/VR / XR, etc) is desirable. 

In order to be successful in this role, you should have:

  • A relevant degree in Design, Architecture, or a closely related discipline, and a postgraduate qualification in the relevant discipline.
  • A recognised Higher Education teaching qualification or relevant teaching experience or positive commitment to gaining HEA Fellowship within two years.
  • Appropriate professional architectural practice or teaching experience and expertise that spans architecture and design disciplines. 
  • Knowledge that supports the delivery of a curriculum that spans Architecture and Design disciplines, and commitment to develop innovative teaching practices.
  • Excellent communications skills to inspire learners, manage large groups of students, and support students with various needs to meet learning requirements and progress onto graduate study.

The school is particularly keen to appoint research-active lecturers to support future REF submissions.  You will have a high-quality research profile (consistent with your career stage) and evidence of the potential to develop externally funded research programmes. 

You will become a member of one of the Centres of Research Excellence
(https://www.brighton.ac.uk/research/organisation/cores/index.aspx)
with access to world class facilities within the School.

This is a 0.4 FTE permanent Lecturer post.
