Abertay is a modern university with a global outlook, rooted in its local and national communities. In 2018 we marked the 130th anniversary of our foundation as an institution dedicated to supporting science, industry and the professions with a distinctive interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary approach to teaching, research and knowledge exchange.

The University now seeks to appoint a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Analytical Biochemistry within the School of Applied Sciences.

The School of Applied Sciences delivers programmes and applied research in the areas of food and drink, the built and natural environment, forensic and biomedical sciences, mental health nursing, counselling, psychology, and sport and exercise. There has been significant growth in the School’s research output in recent years with outstanding results in the last REF research intensity for modern Universities in Scotland.

You will work and contribute to different projects in the division of Engineering and food science:

  • You will investigate the bioavailability of seaweed and prebiotic functionality of fucoidan, extracted from seaweed (INFOGEST, Caco-2 cell culture, Colonic fermentation, analysis of metabolites using GCMS and/or LCQTOF)
  • You will lead the analysis of biological samples of our VAPE project, funded by NHS Tayside, aiming to discover specific biomarkers of harm caused by passive exposure to vaping. VAPE (Vascular Effects of Passive Exposure) consists of two pilot studies looking to analyse urine and saliva of 150 women and 150 children who are passively exposed to smoking, vaping and healthy controls (50 per group). (LCMSMS, LCqToF)
  • You will contribute to the development of analytical methods to measure fatty acid profiles in plasma samples using GCMS. In this international collaborative project, school aged children in Zimbabwe have been fed a Mopane-enriched porridge to fight malnutrition. Plasma samples from this nutritional intervention will be analysed to assess whether the intervention has improved fatty acid profiles.

The Post-doctoral Research Fellow will be required to help with the design of experimental materials, analyses of biological fluids using state of the art chromatography techniques (LCqTOF HRMS, GCMS), organize and run data collection, analyse data and communicate findings. Run INFOGEST on variety of samples, assess bioavailability using CACO2 cells and colonic fermentation. You will need to have a good understanding of the main statistical software associated with mass spectrometry as well as PCA analysis. You will work closely with the research team to ensure the research is completed effectively and within the time constraints.

If you believe you have the skills and experience for this exciting and challenging role, please submit your application through our online recruitment system.
