The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate to contribute to cutting-edge research in materials and structural testing within liquid hydrogen environments. This collaborative project will be conducted between the Composites Research Group and the Translational Energy Research Centre/Energy Innovation Centre.
The ideal candidate will conduct research on materials testing in cryogenic environments, specifically in liquid hydrogen. They will design and construct testing facilities and equipment for cryogenic liquids, ensuring the safe handling of gaseous and liquid hydrogen. Experience in testing materials such as metals, polymers, and composites under cryogenic conditions is highly desired. Additionally, knowledge of designing cryostats for operations at temperatures as low as 4K is an advantage.
Candidates should hold a PhD in engineering or materials science and have extensive experience in materials testing within cryogenic environments, preferably including liquid hydrogen. They should possess advanced knowledge of designing and constructing materials testing facilities and equipment for cryogenic conditions and be familiar with testing metals, polymers, and composites in such environments. Knowledge of designing cryostats for extremely low-temperature operations is an added asset.
The successful candidate will demonstrate independence, creativity, and flexibility in their research approaches. They must be a strong team player, capable of working effectively with colleagues in Sheffield and with external academic and industrial partners. Excellent communication and knowledge-sharing abilities are essential, as is an interdisciplinary approach to research. Additionally, they will be expected to contribute to the academic knowledge base through research publications and presentations.
We invite qualified candidates to apply for this exciting opportunity to advance their careers in a research environment and contribute to impactful innovations in the field of cryogenic materials testing.
We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
