The School of Languages and Cultures at Sheffield is looking for a Teaching Associate in French to join our team next year. If you’re committed to helping develop the study of French at University level, we’d love to hear from you.

As a Teaching Associate in French, you will play a crucial role in contributing to the success of our students and helping them compete in a globalized world. This unique opportunity will allow you to showcase your expertise and passion for the French language, history and culture, while working closely in a team-oriented environment.

We undertake teaching and research in European languages, including those now widely spoken and used across the Americas and Africa. Languages of specialism in the School include Catalan, Czech, Dutch, French (including Francophonie), German, Luxembourgish, Portuguese (peninsular, Brazilian and African), Russian, and Spanish (peninsular and Latin American). Areas of academic specialization include linguistics, translation, literature, visual studies, culture, history and intellectual history.

You’ll teach and examine across a range of French and Francophone Studies core and optional modules, help look after our students’ pastoral needs, and contribute to the administration of the French and Francophone programme. We’ll welcome your contribution to the intellectual life of the School, whether that is through your commitment to improving teaching, your research interests, or ideally both. This is a unique opportunity for specialists in either French gender/area studies or nineteenth-century French studies. We welcome applications from qualified candidates who can cover one or both of these areas. If you're interested in a part-time position and possess expertise in one of these specialisms, you should indicate your area of interest within your application.

You’ll already have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in a relevant area of French and Francophone studies, and you’ll be able to contribute to core aspects of our teaching programme in French and Francophone history, literature and societies. You’ll have a near-fluent or a fluent command of French.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.

What We Offer

  • 41 days annual leave (including closure days and Bank Holidays), with the possibility to purchase up to ten additional days.
  • Up to 5 days of paid time off to cover emergency caring responsibilities.
  • A commitment to work life balance including, flexible working opportunities and hybrid working where possible.
