Neuroinflammation underlies a broad array of neurological disease, from stroke to cancer. The ability to detect and monitor inflammation in the body is severely limited, hampering efforts to develop and apply new treatments. We are now recruiting for up to two fully-funded PhD studentships that will focus on the development and application of imaging approaches for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to probe molecular neuroinflammation pathways, with the ability to access multichannel/multiplex imaging outputs using PARASHIFT MRI – akin to blue/green/red imaging in fluorescence microscopy.

One studentship will focus on the chemical synthesis and application of new MRI contrast agents, while the other will focus on studying biological models of neuroinflammation and developing imaging methods. Each student will have their own distinct project while working closely with each other and a wider team of postdoctoral researchers and PhD students to increase the impact of the research. A background in chemistry, biochemistry, life sciences, imaging, and/or related fields would be particularly well suited for these studentships.

Applications are open for UK candidates to apply for these fully funded PhD studentships at the University of Nottingham within the School of Chemistry and the School of Medicine. The posts are linked to a recently awarded Future Leaders Fellowship to explore new methods for imaging neuroinflammation. The students will be based within an active research group that spans both schools, joining a growing team of interdisciplinary researchers.

Eligibility: The studentship is available for UK applicants, who have or expect to obtain, a First or 2:1 in a relevant discipline. EU applicants who can confirm residency in the UK for at least three years before October 2024, you may also be eligible for a full award.

If you are interested in applying, please email peter.harvey@nottingham.ac.uk. Any queries about potential fit, degree background, and further details on the project are welcome. The exact nature of the research can be tailored to individuals, so please do get in touch to discuss further if of interest. Applications will close on 31st July but be reviewed as received, so please email as soon as possible if interested.
