About the role
We are looking to fill the role of Tissue Handling Technician to work in the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences. The successful candidate will be based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, where the Oxford Radcliffe Biobank (ORB) and Oxford Centre for Histopathology Research (OCHRe) offices and laboratories are located.
In this varied role you will be providing a complete range of end to end services for sample and data acquisition for research projects requesting tissue, blood and other bodily fluid samples, including one key project being the Oxford-Janssen Cartography Collaboration projects. You will work to identify potential participants, approach patients to discuss donating to research through ORB and obtain formal consent. Working to support the Cartography project, you will provide tissue, blood and other body fluid samples from patients undergoing surgery for bladder and kidney cancers. Supporting the bladder pathway, tissue biopsies are taken during surgery for which you will be trained and required to attend. Sample collections and patient clinics you will attend occur between the John Radcliffe Hospital and Churchill Hospital. You will also be required to support additional collection pathways to support OCHRe approved research projects. These pathways include but are not limited to supporting T-cell research by collecting tissue from tonsillectomies and supporting the development of liquid biopsy tests for lung cancer recurrence by arranging, collecting and processing blood samples. You will also be required to support with clinical data collection and anonymisation, by interrogating and working within various databases. You will also be required to support with laboratory and equipment maintenance, including sub-zero freezers and liquid nitrogen facilities. There is opportunity to develop additional skills if necessary (e.g. phlebotomy, slide scanning, microtomy).
About you
A BSc in a scientific (or related) subject or equivalent, or having acquired substantial relevant experience is essential for this post. You will be expected to develop good working relationships with surgeons and other theatre staff and to act as “Champion” for the Cartography project. You will be part of a team of tissue handling technicians and provide support other biobanking pathways when necessary. You will have previous experience of the consenting process or other patient facing interactions. Excellent communication and time management skills are essential for this role, as you will work with patients, clinical staff and surgical teams across hospitals. The successful candidate will need to explain and interpret procedures clearly and sensitively, and also have the ability to interact confidently with a wide range of internal and external contacts at all levels on a daily basis.
The successful candidate will also have proven work experience working in a laboratory performing basic laboratory techniques such as blood processing and will have an awareness of relevant legislation related to human sample acquisition, storage and processing. There is opportunity to develop skills in phlebotomy, histological techniques and help the technical team in our group. You will be computer literate including MS Office, accurate data entry skills and the ability to maintain and interrogate electronic databases.
You will need to be willing to travel across different locations in Oxford University Hospitals and will have an ability to plan and manage your own work schedule, whilst remaining adaptable to changing priorities.
