Salary: £36,024 to £44,263
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 3rd July 2024

Job Ref: 173819

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies aims to appoint an Early Career Fellowship in Islamic Art and Architecture for three years, to develop, individually and collaboratively, new research projects and approaches to the field.

This position is a great opportunity for a suitably qualified scholar to develop their career through research, collaborative work and some teaching in Islamic Art and Architecture at Oxford. As well as developing their own research within the field, with a focus on the Arabic-speaking world and its material culture, the successful candidate will contribute and present new ideas for research projects and for generating research income. Activities associated with the research may include small scale project management and collaboration with the Samir Shamma Professor of Islamic Numismatics, Epigraphy and Material Culture.

You will hold a doctorate in a subject relating to Islamic Art and Architecture, with a specialisation in the Arabic-speaking world and its material culture between circa 650 and 1900 CE, obtained no earlier than 1 October 2021. You will be able to demonstrate experience of research using Arabic primary sources in this field, and have a publication record of international standing. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills are also essential, including the ability to write for publication and present research proposals and results. As responsibilities of the post also include some graduate teaching in the postholder’s area of expertise, some prior experience of small-group and class teaching would also be valuable.

This position is based in central Oxford. This is a full-time, fixed-term position until 30 September 2027.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 29th July 2024.

Interviews are expected to take place remotely at the end of August 2024
