The post

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Professor Lucy Rowland. This NERC funded post is available from 01/10/2024 to 30/09/2025. The successful applicant will deliver a research project titled ‘Using plant hydraulic scaling to predict the drought vulnerability of the world 's tallest tropical trees. The candidate will lead research bringing together existing datasets on plant wood and leaf hydraulic and anatomical properties collected in SE Asian forests. The PDRA will then be responsible for processing and analysing these data and delivering a publication from them. In addition, the candidate will support a short field campaign to Tumucumaque National reserve in Brazil and support the collection of trait data there, which will be led by Brazilian partners. During this field campaign the candidate will assist with the collection of plant hydraulic data on some of the largest trees in the Amazon.

Due to the short-term nature of this contract the ideal candidate will have existing knowledge of plant hydraulic function and have the capacity to speak some Portuguese to interact with Brazilian partners.

The post will include details of duties:

1) Short periods of fieldwork in Brazil; 2) Processing and analysing environmental and ecological data; 3) Liaising with Brazilian partners; 5) Presenting research at international conferences; 6) Writing high impact publications;

About you

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to make and process plant hydraulic and anatomical trait measurements, undertake complex statistical analysis in R or equivalent software, undertake fieldwork in remote tropical forest locations, lead publications and manage partnerships with collaborators in Brazil
