The Department of Geography is seeking to appoint a Geospatial and Quantitative Skills Specialist from 1 September 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The role-holder will be the Department's primary technical specialist for geospatial and multitemporal data handling and analysis, providing support to both staff and students in technical GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and geographical data skills, offering both structured and reactive training in appropriate skills and software. They will design and run quantitative and geospatial skills practical classes for undergraduate students and contribute to a cross-departmental postgraduate research methods training programme. They will work collaboratively as part of the Department's IT team, with the School of Physical Sciences' Head of IT and with specialists in central University Information Services (UIS) to deliver consistently high-quality IT and data handling support to the Department's teaching, research and administration.
The successful candidate will have a first degree, Level 6 vocational qualification, or equivalent experience. A qualification in a discipline allowing the demonstration of expertise in geographical information systems, remote sensing and quantitative skills is highly desirable. They should have experience in collecting, managing and processing geospatial and multitemporal data and be able to demonstrate experience in effectively sharing technical knowledge and skill to support the outputs and learning of colleagues and users. Experience of designing and/or delivering practical teaching or training programmes at undergraduate and/or Masters level is desirable. Expert knowledge of Python, R, Google Earth Engine, Excel, QGIS and vector graphics (e.g. Inkscape) is required.
