The role

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented researcher with expertise in health data, data science, medical statistics, and/or machine learning to join the Electronic Health Records research team at the University of Bristol. The team is led by Professor Jonathan Sterne, Dr Rachel Denholm and Dr Venexia Walker. The post-holder will be based within the University of Bristol’s Department of Population Health Sciences, which is a leading UK centre for data science research. They will work closely with leading researchers in data science and health informatics.

The global research response to the COVID-19 pandemic led to the unprecedented use of extremely large datasets based on linked electronic health records (EHRs) available within secure, privacy-protecting Trusted Research Environments. These include OpenSAFELY (OpenSAFELY: Home) and the new NHS England Secure Data Environment Service for England (NHS England Secure Data Environment (SDE) - NHS Digital), each of which includes linked data on more than 50 million people. In addition, the NHS is embarking on an ambitious initiative to build several sub-national secure data environments which will host detailed secondary care, imaging and genomic data, linked with primary and other secondary care medical records. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest groups in the country with expertise in the use of these resources for applied research, in particular advanced medical statistical methods and target trial design and analysis.

The post-holder will be based within the University of Bristol’s Department of Population Health Sciences, which is a leading UK centre for data science research. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to make informal enquiries to Dr Rachel Denholm (r.denholm@bristol.ac.uk) or Venexia Walker (venexia.walker@bristol.ac.uk).
