We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual for the role of Research Assistant, to support Dr Christina Heroven on a Wellcome Trust-funded project at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Oxford Institute (COI), Nuffield Department of Medicine.

Our research focuses on understanding cell signalling in cancer and exploring new ways of inhibiting cancer growth. Specifically, we investigate the regulation of Receptor Tyrosine Kinases. Using protein engineering, we develop synthetic ligands that exploit the cell’s inhibitory mechanisms. This is an emerging field of research that holds great potential for therapeutic applications and for providing fundamental insights into cell signalling.

The primary role of this position will be to design and produce synthetic proteins, and test their inhibitory effect using biochemical and cellular assays. You will determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses and use specialist scientific equipment in a laboratory environment. You will manage your own tasks, projects and administrative activities, where appropriate. Additionally, you will gather, analyse, present scientific data from a variety of sources and contribute to discussions, share research findings and scientific reports. Training will be provided, and you may also be responsible for training group members.

To be successful in this role, it is essential that you hold a BSc in biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, biotechnology or related scientific areas together with experience of laboratory support in a life science laboratory. You will also have experience in the preparation of common buffers and basic laboratory techniques. You will be able to manage own research and administrative activities, including the ability to prioritize and manage a varied workload in order to meet deadlines. Having experience in protein expression and purification is desirable.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
