We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a motivated individual to lead the compliance and risk section of a new buildings operations team within the Life and Mind Building (LaMB).

The LaMB is currently under construction and is the largest building project the University has ever undertaken. It will house advanced research laboratories as well as modern lecture theatres and will significantly improve the way psychological and biological science is undertaken in Oxford, helping scientists to solve some of our major global challenges. It will be home to the Department of Experimental Psychology and the Department of Biology.

The role holder will act as the primary point of contact for compliance and risk-related matters and be committed to creating a safe, efficient and compliant environment for employees, students, visitors and members of the public. As well as keeping abreast of any changes in legislation that will impact on the operation of the building, the role holder will be responsible for conducting regular audits and inspections to maintain compliance with building codes, fire safety standards, and environmental regulations. This will include ensuring that all statutory testing, preventive maintenance and health and safety checks are carried out promptly and compliantly.

In anticipation of practical completion (PC) of the building (currently March 2025), the successful candidate will be expected to develop both compliance and health & safety policies and procedures. This includes investigating and recommending software solutions in order to ensure robust compliance recording. Similarly, during the lead-up to PC, the role holder will work closely with external contractors to identify and assess potential risks to building operations and subsequently, develop and execute risk mitigation strategies.

The role holder will lead the development and implementation of health and safety policies and procedures within the building and conduct regular health and safety audits and inspections. Additionally, you will also provide training and guidance to staff on health and safety best practices. As a senior member of building management, the role holder will investigate and report on incidents, accidents, and emergencies, as well as maintain comprehensive records of risk assessments, and health and safety incidents. This will also require extensive collaboration with internal teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and safety.

To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrable and significant experience of compliance and risk management with an emphasis on health and safety. It is essential that you have experience in working within a scientific environment, with an understanding of statutory requirements in wet chemistry research labs.

The University of Oxford is committed to equality and valuing diversity. All applicants will be judged on merit, according to the selection criteria.

This position is offered full time on a permanent contract.
