We are seeking to appoint a Catering Assistant in the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research's coffee room, based on the Downing Site in Cambridge. This is a key role in the heart of the Institute, where you will be able to build great working relationships with your customers. This role is offered on a part-time basis, working five mornings per week, Monday to Friday.

About the role:

As Catering Assistant, you will work on your own initiative to ensure the smooth running of the coffee room on a day-to-day basis, whilst maintaining a high standard of cleanliness within the café. You will also be responsible for making sure food hygiene practices are followed and that special orders are delivered for meetings and events when required. Daily activities will include:

  •  Setting-up the coffee room each morning, ready to welcome staff, students and visitors
  •  Preparing and serving hot drinks throughout the morning.
  •  Loading and unloading the dishwasher and clearing the service area before you leave.
  •  Handling small amounts of cash and totaling the amount taken each day ready for banking by the finance team.
  •  Keeping a record of income and expenditure on a simple spreadsheet.

About you:

As the ideal candidate for this role, you will join us with:

  •  The ability to provide a welcoming environment to all users of the coffee room.
  •  Strong organisational and timekeeping skills.
  •  A good standard of literacy and numeracy in order to read instructions and complete order forms.
  •  Good verbal communication skills to effectively support customers face to face.
  •  A reliable work ethic.
