The role

The University of Bristol is at the cutting edge of research with a global reputation across many themes, from climate change to social justice. Within the Finance Division, the Research Centre of Excellence is responsible for all financial matters relating to our innovative research across the institution including pre award bid support, post award management, compliance, and financial analysis.

As Director of Research Finance, an active member of the Finance Leadership Team, you will lead the Centre which is key in ensuring the delivery of the University’s pivotal research output. You will lead a substantial team that builds and maintains financial systems, develops processes, and ensures the University has the expertise required to support all financial aspects of a wide range of research bids. You will take responsibility for compliance with the financial regulations from funders and identify both financial risks and opportunities relating to research finance and funding.

What will you be doing?

  • You will provide the leadership the University needs on research finance to help it deliver the 2030 University Strategy, whilst ensuring compliance and sound cost recovery.
  • Ensure high volumes of complex grants are handled effectively, and excellent support is offered to academic staff during pre and post award.
  • Support high profile bids that require you to work with Treasury and executive teams at funding councils.
  • Develop, design, implement and adapt systems and processes to shape a culture of continuous improvement and have an impact on the University’s strategic ambition. 

You should apply if

  • You have experience within financial management in a large complex organisation, you can build and motivate a high-performing finance team.
  • In depth understanding of the research finance and grant environment.
  • You hold a recognised professional accountancy qualification or have equivalent experience.
  • Ability to ensure legal and funder compliance is adhered to, reported on and stakeholders are engaged to support with this.
  • Extensive experience with ERP and financial reporting systems.
  • Enthusiasm to contribute to the University’s research and academic mission.
