The role

The Department of English at the University of Bristol invites applications for a Lectureship in English Literature and Community Engagement (Pathway 3, level b). The main focus of this part-time open-ended post is teaching and related administrative support for the English Literature and Community Engagement (ELCE) BA programme, particularly the teaching of Community Engagement units. The successful candidate will have expertise in Community Engagement within their discipline; a further specialism in any literary period(s) from the early medieval to the present is welcome. The successful candidate will be able to teach: community engagement, including the history, theory and practice of the discipline; academic skills (for the purposes of both community engagement and English Literature); some topics in English Literature. They will also be able to use innovative and/or transhistorical approaches to engage and enthuse students and wider audiences.  

The successful candidate will be able to start on 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

What will you be doing?

You will contribute to the teaching of Community Engagement on the English Literature and Community Engagement BA programme, delivering research-led specialist units, contributing to team-taught units relevant to the field of Community Engagement, and teaching flexibly across the English curriculum as required. You will pursue pedagogic research relevant to your area of specialism. You will take responsibility for a share of organisation and administration mainly at Programme and Department level as appropriate to your experience and career stage. You will be expected to develop an understanding of University structures, policies, and procedures necessary to fulfil such roles effectively.  

You should apply if

  1. You have a postgraduate qualification (MA or PhD) in a relevant area of Community Engagement (or a closely related field) by the end of August 2024 and are actively engaging in scholarship (including pedagogical scholarship) in your field of expertise. 
  2. You have a proven track record of teaching in Community Engagement (or a closely related discipline), at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and potentially also of teaching English Literature. You have completed an HEA-accredited teaching qualification or have clear plans to do so. You are an engaging and inspiring teacher, committed to developing your teaching practice and enthusing and supporting students at all levels. 
  3. You have some administrative experience in Higher Education.
