Background
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Birmingham seeks to appoint a 1.0FTE Teaching Fellow in Philosophy for a fixed term of 12 months. The post holder will teach at a range of levels to undergraduates and postgraduates, through allocated lectures and seminars, and online as part of our Distance Learning programme, so that the Department of Philosophy’s teaching objectives are met. The post holder may contribute to the design and running of modules with other colleagues, will plan and prepare teaching, undertake management/administration arising from teaching, and contribute to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.
The successful applicant will be required to teach a Master’s module in Ethics and Global Ethics, and a version of this module for our Distance Learning programme, both in the first semester. Then in the second semester they will teach second-level modules in the Logic: its limits and scope, and a contribution to the team-taught first-level introductory module, Problems of Philosophy. The role will involve both lecturing and seminar teaching, and other duties will include the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate taught students’ dissertations, the usual marking and course-related admin, and other tasks as deemed appropriate by the Head of Department.
Teaching is done within an established teaching programme (under the supervision of an academic member of staff). The post holder will also contribute to the enhancement of student experience and employability. This role is an excellent opportunity to be part of a vibrant philosophy department with an excellent research environment and high student satisfaction.
