This is an exciting time to join the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Our team driving our undergraduate Future Nurse and postgraduate portfolio is expanding to support our increased student numbers.

Role Summary

You will contribute to a range of education-related activities across our undergraduate nursing and postgraduate portfolios.  Working closely with programme directors, module leaders and academic staff and depending on your specific experience you will provide teaching, learning and research activity. In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students and practice partners.

Your teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels; and (b) enhancement of the student experience and employability. 

You will be expected to advance teaching and learning practice in your modules within the School of Nursing, take a role in leading aspects of curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic and pastoral support.  You will deliver excellent teaching that inspires students and is informed by discipline-based research.

Building on our success in the recent REF 2021 education and research candidates will be expected to hold a doctoral qualification (or be close to completion) contribute to postgraduate research supervision (PGR) and pursue funding and publication opportunities aligned to your research interests and themes in the school.

Person Specification

This post is offered on a Education Focused (TF) or Education and Research (E&R) basis.  The post holder must hold a current NMC registration as a registered nurse (adult).  A dual qualification in another field of nursing is desirable. Applicants should hold a higher degree in a subject relevant to nursing. They must hold or willing to undertake postgraduate award in health professions education/Fellowship of Higher Education Academy. We welcome applications from individuals with a PhD or equivalent who are able to demonstrate research or scholarly outputs and who wish to pursue their research here at Birmingham.  

Applicants should have a proven ability to devise, advise on, and manage learning and research or scholarship.  Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels and extensive teaching experience and research/scholarship within subject specialism and can demonstrate commitment to interprofessional working.

The University has introduced a revised Academic Career Framework and new Assistant Professors joining us will participate in a 5 year Academic Development Programme which will provide mentorship and development opportunities to support progression to Associate Professor at the end of the programme.
