Background
This post is funded by a new programme grant awarded by Cancer Research UK. Although based at the University of Birmingham, the successful candidate will join a diverse team of researchers across five UK universities and the University of Iceland, who have come together to apply an interdisciplinary approach to preventing the incurable blood cancer myeloma. We know that a common condition precedes all cases of myeloma, but very few people with this pre-malignant condition progress to myeloma. Key to the success our programme is to understand why some individuals with the earlier condition don’t get myeloma whilst others do. To help understand this the successful candidate will use primary cultures of patient derived cells and cell lines and a variety of in vitro investigative approaches to understand the variability in precursor disease. Other newly appointed researchers across our network will be performing parallel in vivo, metabolomics, bioinformatics and health economic analyses. There will therefore be learning and training opportunities beyond the scope of this particular post. We are looking for candidates excited about this interdisciplinarity and who can provide evidence of successful team working whilst delivering on a particular programme of work. Candidates will have an undergraduate degree and a PhD (or near to completion) in appropriate disciplines and will have a demonstrable passion for improving the outlook for cancer patients through rigorous research.
