Research Associate – RF Coil Development
We are seeking to appoint a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to design and develop radiofrequency (RF) coils for the UK National Facility for 11.7T Human MRI Scanning at the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, University of Nottingham. You will be based at the Imaging Centre of Excellence (ICE), University of Glasgow and you will be part of a multi-disciplinary group of engineers, physicists, and clinicians in the ICE building. The post holder will work on a UKRI funded program, and the post offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with other UK ultra-high field (UHF) MRI research sites as well as with international UHF research labs.
The project aims to develop a range of coils such as parallel transmit array coils in combination with high-density receive arrays and multi-nuclei coils for the UK National Facility. You will be responsible for the complete development cycle of the RF coil, starting from design optimization using EM simulations, engineering / construction of the RF coil and safety validation. This will also involve close collaboration with the Nottingham MRI group and users of the National Facility.
The ICE building is located within the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow and it houses a state-of-the-art 7T Terra scanner, which is fully integrated in a clinical setting. An RF coil development lab equipped with measurement equipments and EM simulation infrastructure has been setup within ICE. We also have access to fine-mechanic workshop and design houses offering industrial design of the coil housing, and a track record of developing custom-built coils for UHF MRI.
You must hold a PhD in MRI physics, electrical/electronic engineering or a related subject. Expertise in Matlab programming and 3D EM simulation such as CST or HFSS is essential. You must be hands-on, eager to conduct test and measurements in an electronics lab. Prior background in RF engineering and / or research background in metamaterials / meta-surfaces is preferred. Soldering skills are desirable.
You will also have a track record of publications, excellent time management skills and the ability to work effectively both in a team and independently.
The position is available immediately for 18 months, with a possibility for further extension depending on performance. The appointment will be at Grade 6 or 7 depending on your experience.
This position is full time and funded for up to 18 months.
