An opportunity has arisen for a well-qualified and highly motivated individual to join the UK’s preeminent Zirconium research group at the University of Manchester. The successful candidates will play a key role in delivery of the ambitious Manchester-led, EPSRC-funded programme grant MIDAS (Mechanistic Understanding of Irradiation Damage in Fuel Assemblies). MIDAS brings together world-leading researchers from the Universities of Manchester and Oxford, Imperial College London, and the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, specialising in fuel cladding, irradiation damage, multiscale characterisation, and modelling in meet the programme’s key aim of enhancing nuclear power efficiency.

The group is one of the largest academic groups working in the field of Zirconium alloys worldwide. Interests range from understanding the mechanisms that control the manufacture of Zr cladding materials and fuel channels to performance aspects, including the use of coatings to improve the fuel assembly performance. In the multi-institution MIDAS programme we are particularly working to understand the many ways in which nuclear fuel cladding degrades so that reactor performance can be improved. You can find out more about MIDAS at www.zr-midas.org.

It is expected that the post-holders will work closely with team members at Manchester, as well as MIDAS project partners, and a range of external collaborators and stakeholders. They will be expected to pro-actively disseminate the results of the research within MIDAS and the wider Zirconium/nuclear materials community through conference attendance and publication in high-quality journals.

You will be based in the newly opened Henry Royce institute Hub Building at the University of Manchester, becoming a part of the academic Royce community. This will include opportunities to direct and influence development of key capabilities and infrastructure, and well as have input into national research priorities. Read more about Royce at https://www.royce.ac.uk. You will also be expected to maintain regular interactions with the Rolls-Royce Core Materials group, to provide progress updates and to develop new avenues of research.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
