Are you friendly, organised, and professional with a passion for working with people? The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences is currently seeking a receptionist to play a pivotal role in shaping first impressions of the Institute. As the frontline representative, you'll contribute significantly to our team's goals by ensuring efficient operations and maintaining a welcoming environment.

The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) is a national and international visitor research centre running programmes on themes from across the full breadth of the mathematical sciences, with applications in a very wide range of societal, scientific, and technological areas. The Institute attracts leading scientists, both from the UK and from overseas, to interact on research over extended periods. In recent years, the range of activity has expanded commensurate with the Institute's leading role as part of the UK mathematical community's national infrastructure. INI now supports a range of satellite programmes across the UK, and has nurtured new national initiatives such as the National Academy for Mathematical Sciences and the Knowledge Exchange Hub. As part of the INI, the Newton Gateway to Mathematics acts as a knowledge intermediary for the mathematical sciences, reaching out and engaging with the users of mathematics, in industry, business, public sector and other scientific disciplines. Together, the INI and Newton Gateway facilitate world-class research and innovation across the mathematical sciences.

The Role

The receptionist's role is a linchpin in the machinery of the institution. They are the unsung heroes who ensure that day-to-day activities run like clockwork. With a smile, they juggle phone calls, room bookings, and the ever-present flow of visitors. They are the first point of contact, embodying the ethos of the Institute and setting the tone for the visitor experience. The receptionist's contribution is a blend of administrative proficiency and the human touch, which together create an environment where the Institute and its community can thrive.

The successful candidate will collaborate in a job-sharing arrangement, assuming the afternoon duties in partnership with our existing morning receptionist. The role demands an enthusiastic and dependable person, with a background in front-of-house or customer engagement positions, who appreciates the critical impact of first impressions and is committed to delivering superior customer service. You will possess a blend of polite and efficient communication skills, with a proven track record of balancing client priorities and managing simultaneous tasks effectively. With a repertoire of strong interpersonal abilities and a flexible mindset, you will navigate obstacles, find solutions, and maintain a calm, professional demeanour throughout. A sense of pride in maintaining a welcoming and inviting building is essential.

Benefits of working at University of Cambridge include:

  • An auto-enrolment pension scheme, with a generous employer contribution.
  • Travel benefits and retail discounts at over 2,000 local and national stores.

Interviews for the post will take place during the week of 22 July 2024 (subject to confirmation).
