We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering for an ambitious post-doctoral researcher looking to use their skills in materials science to make an impact on the safe disposal of vitrified nuclear waste. You will join the world-leading ISL research group as part of an international collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Vanderbilt University, USA evaluating new glass leaching methodologies intended to support the multi-billion dollar Hanford clean-up programme. The post is initially for 6 months with the expectation of a further year’s funding.
You should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in materials or an appropriate physical science and have strong laboratory skills including aqueous phase analysis and solid state characterisation techniques. The post-holder will also have knowledge and experience of radioactive waste immobilisation in glass materials and the application of geochemical and surface chemical analyses.
