University of Liverpool - Faculty of Science and Engineering - School of Environmental Science - Department of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences

Location: Liverpool
Salary: £38,205 to £44,264 per annum
Hours: Full Time

The Rock Deformation Laboratory and Seismology Group invites applications from highly motivated and talented individuals for the position of post-doctoral research associate to work on a UKRI – India funded grant focused on intra- and inter-plate seismicity and hazard in India. In this project, you will investigate key differences between intra- and inter-plate seismicity from local seismic networks and attempt to understand these using analogue laboratory experiments. Acquisition and processing of both seismic data from India and acoustic emissions from laboratory frictional sliding experiments will be employed to characterize populations of events. The position includes a range of fieldwork opportunities, including sample collection and deployment of seismic networks in India.  You will work with the Liverpool team as well as with the Indian team whose expertise lies in seismology, borehole geophysics and laboratory testing. The project also includes elements of outreach, in which the successful candidate will be expected to contribute, to communicate mitigation of seismic hazard to local government and schools.

The Rock Deformation Laboratory is a leading global facility for research into the fundamental processes of rock deformation. It has a large equipment base and a reputation for innovative development of equipment and novel experiments. The laboratory is supported by excellent microstructural facilities at Liverpool which are renowned for cutting-edge research into microstructural characterization. Liverpool plays a leading role in the investigation of Earth processes through earthquake, volcano and passive seismology. The Seismology Group’s instrument pool includes broadband seismometers, acoustic sensors and geophones, parts of which will be deployed in India during this project. In addition, we have state-of-the-art computational facilities available, including GPU-clusters and HPC.

A PhD (awarded or imminent) in Geology or Geophysics is required for this role.

Any applicants who are still awaiting their PhD to be awarded should be aware that if successful, they will be appointed at grade 6, spine point 30.
