Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Research Fellow to act as a scientific coordinator for a new Measles Analytics Hub within the Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium (VIMC, www.vaccineimpact.org). VIMC is a major collaborative initiative with a budget of over £13.8 million from 2022 to 2027. Our consortium works with mathematical modellers, epidemiologists, policymakers, and global health partners across the world, to provide high-quality estimates of the public health impact of vaccination, to inform and improve decision making.

You will be based within the VIMC secretariat at Imperial College London’s world-class School of Public Health, on our new White City campus.

This exciting new opportunity arises from a grant supplement from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. VIMC’s new Measles Analytics Hub aims to enhance the measles modelling ecosystem by leveraging and enhancing VIMC’s existing work to coordinate and support policy-relevant analytics and be more inclusive of modelers in low- and middle-income countries. The Hub will identify and address global and regional level questions and will also support select sub-regional and high-impact country facing measles (and potentially rubella) modelling work. You will coordinate the activities of the Hub, working with multiple partners to facilitate a dynamic exchange between measles programme/policy stakeholders and modellers. You will work closely with the elected co-Chairs of the Hub, who will provide high-level scientific leadership. In addition, you will be expected to co-author and submit publications to refereed journals.

The post will suit a candidate with excellent modelling and coordination skills who wants to support international research collaborations with a real-world impact.

Duties and responsibilities

You will:

  • Effectively engage measles modellers and stakeholders in identifying and addressing policy and programmatic questions, working closely with the Hub Co-Chairs.
  • Co-develop and manage a workplan with modellers and stakeholders that articulates the policy-relevant questions that will be addressed by the initial phase of the Hub.
  • Deliver scientific reports to funders and ensure the Hub achieves its deliverables
  • Organise regular meetings and workshops, with support from the Hub’s Project Administrator
  • Develop and expand the membership of the Hub, with an emphasis on including modellers based in countries with a high burden of measles
  • Produce position papers representing the views of the measles modelling community on various issues, including data requirements.

Essential requirements

  • PhD in one of the following areas, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience: infectious disease epidemiology, ecology, population biology, mathematics, statistics, or an alternative highly quantitative discipline
  • Knowledge of the epidemiology of measles
  • Experience of the mathematical modelling of the impact of vaccinations
  • Experience of the scientific coordination of policy-driven research across multiple partners
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with other academics.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication.
