The Role

We are seeking an excellent academic to join our staff as an Assistant Professor / Lecturer in Early Irish History. This is a full-time, permanent position, equally affiliated with the Departments of History and Early Irish to the extent of 0.5 FTE each. The person appointed will have a proven record of teaching, research, publication and outreach, appropriate to career stage. They will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching programme and the academic life of the Departments of Early Irish and History and undertake teaching duties on the Departments’ undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as the supervision of Masters and PhD students.

The appointee will be expected to build a strong research profile that supports the University’s research strategy, including affiliating to Research Institutes where appropriate and working with colleagues on national and international research. The appointee will be expected to engage in scholarship of quality and substance and generate publications of international standard.

The ideal candidate will have:

Essential

  • a PhD in a relevant discipline;
  • a record of scholarly research and publication of international quality, demonstrating potential to become a significant contributor in their field;
  • a strong record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, programme development and academic innovation;
  • potential for and commitment to supervising graduate research students;
  • experience of, and commitment to, working in an interdisciplinary setting;
  • good administrative, organisational, teamwork and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Experience of, or potential to, develop outreach initiatives in the subject area;
  • Knowledge of Old Irish language;
  • Knowledge of Latin;
  • Basic competence in Modern Irish language.
