The University of Essex is one of the top research-intensive universities in the UK. The School of CSEE is top-rated and has a long-standing tradition of research into Communications and Networks (COMNET). It was one of the first UK universities to actively research into these areas, back in the Department of Electronic System Engineering (ESE). In the recent Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF’2021), CSEE ranks the 6^th in the UK for our research power and the 9^th for our research impact (by Grade Point Average).

Duties of the Role

You will be appointed as a Senior Research Officer at Essex with a fixed term of 19 months and will work with the PI Dr Zilong Liu (email: zilong.liu@essex.ac.uk) for successful delivery of the two-year project “Evolving Sequences for Beyond-5G Machine-Type Communications (SORT),” funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), UK, as well as a joint research project “High Spectral Efficiency Minimal Interference Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Communication Signals” with NTU Singapore. As a driving force of these projects, you are expected to publish/present the research outputs in quality IEEE journals and flagship conferences and protect them through patent applications (if any). You are also expected to actively engage with the research community and industrial partners for maximizing the project impact. This is a research-focused position and no teaching duties are associated to this post.

Skills and qualifications required

• A Master or PhD degree in wireless communications or equivalent professional experience.
• Excellent writing and presentation skills as well as a strong publication track record in prestigious IEEE journals and/or conferences.
• Rich experience in the design, analysis, and evaluation of physical layer wireless system with an emphasis on coding, modulation, and multiple access.
• Experience in the following research topics will be a great advantage: OFDM, OTFS, ISAC, Code-Domain NOMA (e.g., SCMA/PDMA), RSMA.
• Be familiar with several modern signal processing tools such as compressed sensing and various message passing algorithms.
• Experience in hardware proof-of-concept prototyping (e.g., using USRP testbeds) will be an advantage.

The University of Essex is a campus based University and all academic appointments are made with the expectation that you will be present on campus to fulfil the requirements of your position.
