The Post

As Professor of Applied Business Analytics, you will lead research, scholarship, engagement and teaching activities in the School through professional practice and , expertise. In addition, lead external links with regional, UK and international bodies such as government agencies, schools, colleges, professional bodies, business and industry as appropriate to the subject discipline and School and University strategy.

Professors will have established and maintained international recognition through original, innovative and distinguished contributions to scholarship, research and external engagement. In this instance, we are looking for candidates who can demonstrate how their work is used in organisations, and a commitment to business analytics as a practice. Business analytics aims to determine which datasets are valuable and how they can be leveraged to solve problems and increase efficiency, productivity, and revenue for organisations. The abundance of data creates opportunities for business leaders to make better decisions. The challenge is that interpreting data from multiple sources isn’t common knowledge for most business professionals. How do we know which algorithm to use? How do we know when to apply our human judgment to the decision mix? What are some of the most practical applications of artificial intelligence? We are interested to hear from candidates who are interest in one or more of the following:

  • Descriptive: The interpretation of historical data to identify trends and patterns
  • Diagnostic: The interpretation of historical data to determine why something has happened
  • Predictive: The use of statistics to forecast future outcomes
  • Prescriptive: The application of testing and other techniques to determine which outcome will yield the best result in a given scenario

Description of duties

The post-holder will:

  • Be instrumental in the strategic research leadership of the faculty and to mentor, support and encourage the research and scholarship activities of colleagues within the faculty especially early career academics.
  • Conduct, publish and otherwise disseminate outstanding research of international standing and engage in activities to support the impact of research.
  • Enhance the Faculty’s research culture by securing, in collaboration with colleagues as appropriate, external funding through research grants or contracts.
  • Manage research and knowledge exchange projects within the University, including their financial control, and supervise researchers, research students, and other staff engaged in such projects.
  • Contribute fully to the research and knowledge exchange plans developed by Faculty, including providing such information as may be required to monitor the progress of each member of staff’s research programme. 

Essential criteria

Qualifications

  • PhD/DBA/DMan in relevant discipline
  • Higher Education teaching qualification or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • A sustained track record of publication in leading, peer-reviewed journals, to levels of outstanding excellence and a strong REF profile
  • A significant record of securing research grants/external funding and delivering on research projects as principal or co-applicant
  • A significant record of attracting and supervising research students
