Job Summary 

Imperial College London is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic Research Associate/Bioinformatician to join for 18 months in the first instance starting 4th November 2024.

The successful candidate will be involved in cutting edge research utilising statistical and machine learning models for biomarker discovery, contributing to the advancement of Food allergy. This project will be carried out under the supervision of Dr Myrsini Kaforou and Dr. Sara Fontanella at the National Heart & Lung Institute at the Department of Infectious Diseases. The research focuses on Acute Food Protein induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES), a potentially life threatening non-IgE mediated food allergy. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • The ideal candidate for this position will possess a broad range of skills in gene expression analysis, including multi-omics, systems biology and computer programming. They will ideally be responsible for the analysis of longitudinal RNA-seq data, and proteomics. Given the technical complexity of the research, the post holder must have strong computational and problem-solving skills.
  • You will have responsibility for day-to-day co-ordination, running and maintenance of bioinformatics analysis. This will include designing and implementing data processing pipelines and analyses, preparing data for publication, and assisting with future funding applications.
  • You must be organised, highly self-motivated and have excellent communication, interpersonal and computer skills.
  • You will need to manage your time and performance and must be strongly proactive, knowledgeable and able to solve complex problems with strong data management skills and a high degree of proficiency with one or more statistical software (e.g., R, Matlab, Python).
  • You should also have experience preparing oral and written reports of research findings. Relevant training and development will be encouraged both internally and through identifying relevant external courses and seminars.

Essential requirements

  • You must hold a PhD in Bioinformatics, Statistical Genetics, Statistics or an equivalent subject, or be nearing PhD completion
  • Experience with the analysis of omics data
  • Proficiency with R, Matlab or Python
  • Proven experience of analysing transcriptomics\proteomics
  • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
  • A strong understanding and proven experience of analysing large datasets
  • Experience with workflow analysis specific for omics data analysis-i.e RNA seq, proteomics and previous experience with analysing RNA seq data, microarrays, gene expression, gene enrichment analysis, functional analysis and gene network analysis
  • Experience with longitudinal data analysis
  • Experience handling missing data and imputation
  • Experience within a research environment and publication in relevant and refereed journals
  • Knowledge of Multivariate Statistics and Machine Learning
  • Knowledge of Network Analysis for omics data

The post is full-time and fixed term until May 2026 and you will be based at South Kensington Campus.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £41,694 - £44,888 per annum.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role. Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
