Salary: Clinical Academic, Clinical Academic (CRF) £43,923 to £63,152 plus £2,162 London allowance 

Location: Department of Infectious Disease, Faculty of Medicine, St Mary’s Paddington, moving to South Kensington Campus in the Summer of 2024 

Job Summary 

The post holder will support and lead the clinical development of a range of novel vaccine candidates, contributing to a range of both industry and investigator led early phase clinical trials, with the ultimate aim of helping to prevent and control infectious diseases through vaccination. Clinical studies will be focused on improving understanding of mRNA based vaccine safety and efficacy, supporting the design, development, and conduct of clinical trials, as well as research aimed at understanding the immune-biology of novel vaccine candidates. The Clinical Vaccinology Fellow will work under the supervision of Dr Claire Waddington (Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer) and Professor Robin Shattock (Head of Mucosal Infection and Immunity, Department of Medicine), and will be responsible for ensuring that all studies are conducted in accordance with regulatory and ethical standards. The Fellow will have the opportunity to present research findings at national and international conferences and contribute to research publications, and it is anticipated that work undertaken could contribute towards the completion of a higher degree (MD or PhD). 

This position offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated physician with an interest in vaccinology and clinical research to develop their skills clinical trials and vaccine development, and to make a real impact in the field of vaccinology. 

Duties and responsibilities

The post holder will hold an honorary clinical contract with the appropriate NHS Trust/s and will be expected to take on clinical responsibilities appropriate to their level of experience and expertise.

  • Participating in the planning and design of clinical trials: You will work closely with the study team to help develop study protocols, determine eligibility criteria for study participants, and design data collection tools.
  • Recruiting and enrolling study participants: You will be responsible for identifying and recruiting eligible participants for the trial, ensuring that they understand the study procedures and providing them with informed consent.
  • Conducting clinical assessments and collect and manage study data: you will perform physical examinations, collect biological samples, and administer study interventions to participants according to the study protocol, and collect, manage, and analyse data generated during the trial.
  • Monitoring participant safety: you will be responsible for monitoring participants throughout the trial to identify any adverse events or reactions to the vaccine or study intervention.

Essential requirements

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with GMC registration;
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent;
  • Certification in Advanced Life Support, or equivalent;
  • Clinical experience in the general internal medicine and the management of patients;
  • Clinical experience of vaccinology, immunology and/or infection (microbiology, infectious diseases, virology, HIV and/or sexual health);
