Job Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a dedicated and skilled mechanical engineering technician to manage the operations of our Thermofluids Teaching Laboratory and support our Thermofluids research activities. Our teaching laboratory equipment includes steam power cycles, internal combustion engines, wind tunnel, supersonic flow visualisation, water flow visualisation, air conditioning, pipe flow tests, and more.

The technician role ensures the smooth and safe operation of our dedicated teaching laboratory, including interaction with students; and supports colleagues with innovation in teaching and research. Innovation work will involve using our workshop facilities to design, manufacture, and implement solutions in collaboration with colleagues.

Please note that this is a technical role primarily involved in supporting teaching and research academic staff for undergraduate and postgraduate studies including the teaching of undergraduates in manual mechanical skills. The position does not lead to an Academic or Research role.

Duties and Responsibilities

The key aspects of this role involve running and servicing mechanical teaching apparatus

  • You will be responsible for the efficient running of the Thermofluids Laboratory facilities, including acting as the point of contact for students and research staff.
  • You will support undergraduate students with their laboratory activities and project work, including training and supervising.
  • You will provide a CAD, Design and Manufacturing service to produce bespoke components.
  • You will ensure that the laboratory infrastructure is maintained, identify upgrades, and ensure any works are coordinated with the research and teaching needs.

Skills, knowledge and experience

This role requires skills in design, manufacture and fitting using conventional workshop hand and a variety of machine tools. 

  • You should, at minimum, be educated to the level of a recognised apprentice, or equivalent.
  • Hands on practical experience in laboratory and workshop environments is vital.
  • You will have experience of training others in practical engineering skills.
  • A working knowledge of safety practices in an engineering environment.
