Post-doctoral Research Associate in Global Glacier Modelling

The University of Edinburgh - CSE- GeoSciences

Location: Edinburgh
Salary: £36,974 to £39,347 per annum (Grade 7)
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 18th April 2024
Closes: 2nd May 2024

Full-Time 35 hours per week

Fixed term for 16 months, anticipated start date 1 August 2024.

The opportunity:

We are seeking an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate to carry out modelling and analysis of ice loss and estimates of glacier thickness using the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM) and Factorial Snow Model (FSM) as part of the NERC Highlight Topics project The Big Thaw.

The Big Thaw aims to:

  • Improve measurements and modelling of seasonal snow in high-mountain regions
  • Understand timescales and potential trajectories for change for existing glacier ice, snow and meltwater resources
  • Determine frequency of extreme wet and dry years in the mountain cryosphere, and what climate factors cause these

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

The Big Thaw will make use of a range of modelling and in-situ fieldwork activities. The role of this post is to

  • Develop an effective coupling and calibration strategy using FSM to determine the surface mass balance and runoff of high-mountain glaciers,
  • Deploy this strategy in targeted regions where fieldwork and regional climate modelling is being carried out
  • Interface with the climate modellers who will provide meteorological inputs for the coupled model and with the hydrological modellers who will use glacier coverage and runoff as inputs

You will join a team of investigators in the Schools of GeoScience in the University of Edinburgh, with expertise in ice-sheet, glacier, and climate modelling.

We seek candidates with a PhD (or nearing completion) in global glacier modelling or computational geoscience. Extensive knowledge of Python is essential, and detailed experience developing within OGGM is highly desirable.

We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender or ethnic group. Appointment will be based on merit alone.

To support your application, please provide a CV and a Cover letter please.

Your Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • A PhD (or a PhD close to completion) in a relevant quantitative scientific discipline
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Experience in analysing and interpreting model/observational data, including assessment of uncertainties.
  • Experience with Python (essential) and ability to learn other programming languages (e.g. Fortran), as well as familiarity with Linux.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
