The Role
The role provides an exciting opportunity to work on NIHR HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation (DTE) projects that employ established and innovative approaches (mixed qualitative and quantitative methods), to develop and evaluate new diagnostic tests to address a wide variety of challenging clinical needs.

You will join a team of knowledgeable methodologists in designing, modelling, and analysing quantitative and/or qualitative data for health care research.

Reporting to Dr Kile Green and the Institute Technical Manager team, the role will display an in-depth knowledge of technical or scientific methodological practices, and procedures gained through either experience and/or formal qualification and will deploy this knowledge to provide a range of technical support activities.

You will provide and organise technical and methodological support for the operation of the NIHR HRC DTE. Responsibilities will include carrying out complex research projects, experimental design, planning and progress of work, along with quantitative and qualitative analysis and participation in the publication process.

The skills you will utilise may include grant writing and/or ethical applications, scientific writing, qualitative research including systematic searching, and/or quantitative research including statistical modelling & health-informatics, and/or health economic modelling.

This post is offered on a fixed-term basis for a period of 12 months.

Key Accountabilities

  • Carry out bespoke evidence-generation projects within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones, facilitating progress meetings and to appropriate standards with guidance from senior staff.
  • Contribute, with limited direction, to the delivery of NIHR HRC DTE outputs for national and international stakeholders.
  • Carry out administrative tasks and duties to support the NIHR HRC DTE as required.
  • Create, update, and implement procedures to deliver an aligned, efficient, and effective service.
  • Provide general and specialist research and teaching support including leading methodological development, e.g. workshops, conference sessions.
  • Prepare and analyse data requiring specialist skills and limited direction; ensuring timely completion and maintenance of appropriate records.
  • Design, develop and deliver inductions, demonstrations and training covering complex techniques and specialist equipment.
  • Assist managers with the identification of training and development needs.
  • Contribute to the activities of the methodology team including attending meetings and other events appropriate to the project / team.
  • Contribute to the preparation of papers for publication and disseminate findings at conferences as required.
  • Source, negotiate and liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to resolve both routine and complex problems and investigate replacement options e.g. IT equipment, software.
  • Hold specific safety responsibilities, maintaining in-depth and up-to-date health and safety knowledge. Assist with completion and updating safety paperwork relevant to the specialism, e.g. data protection, GDPR, GCP, data encryption, DSE and inductions.
  • Hold delegated responsibility from the academic lead for the planning, operation and supervision of office space occupied by the HRC team.
  • Manage one or more budgets monitoring resource usage.
  • Maintain specialist knowledge and skills, sharing with others.
  • Mentor junior staff.
