Research Technician

Lancaster University - Biomedical & Life Sciences

Location: Lancaster
Salary: £26,338 to £29,959
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 25th April 2025
Closes: 26th May 2025
Job Ref: 0325-25

Overview of the project

We are looking for a Research Technician to support our research studies exploring how sleep-related brain activity contributes to memory processing. The position is funded by an Academy of Medical Sciences grant awarded to Dr. Sana Hannan, and is available for 24 months (part-time at 0.8 FTE, equivalent to 4 days a week).

This role involves supporting sleep studies with healthy adult participants, including recruitment, screening, and running in-lab sessions. You will collect data using high-density electro-encephalography (EEG), and assist with day-to-day lab operations, including data management, equipment upkeep, inventory, and administrative tasks. The role offers hands-on experience in human neuroscience and the chance to contribute to impactful research that advances our understanding of the important role of sleep in brain function.

Role responsibilities

As part of a friendly and collaborative team, you will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating participant recruitment, screening, and scheduling for research studies
  • Preparing and conducting experiments including high-density EEG, sleep recordings, and behavioural testing
  • Data acquisition and management, and contributing to analysis and reporting
  • Supporting day-to-day lab operations, including equipment maintenance, ordering supplies, record keeping, and assisting with regulatory documentation
  • Providing technical training to students and other lab members

About you

We are keen to hear from candidates who have:

  • A degree in neuroscience, psychology, biomedical sciences or a related discipline
  • Experience working on human research studies, particularly in participant-facing roles
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage time effectively and support lab operations
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and technical troubleshooting, with the confidence to take initiative and work independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach

Experience with EEG, sleep research, or behavioural testing is desirable but not essential – training will be provided for the right candidate. Most importantly, you will bring motivation, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for contributing to meaningful interdisciplinary research.

Why work with us

You will join the growing Network Electrophysiology, Oscillations and Neurobiology (NEON) Lab, led by Dr. Sana Hannan in the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences, and work in an interdisciplinary team with collaborators from Lancaster’s Department of Psychology, the University of Glasgow, UCL, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. This role therefore offers a fantastic opportunity to gain exposure to diverse research methods and environments.

The Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences, part of the Faculty of Health and Medicine, is a vibrant and interdisciplinary research environment focused on human health and disease. It offers state-of-the-art facilities and a collaborative, inclusive culture that supports both independent and team-based research, while promoting work-life balance and individual support.

Informal enquiries are welcome. Please contact Dr. Sana Hannan at: s.hannan@lancaster.ac.uk
