Cyber Security Analyst

The full-time starting salary is normally £37,332.00 per annum, with progression available in post to £40,581.00 per annum. This role also carries a 20% market supplement.

We are seeking a skilled Cyber Security Analyst to join our Compliance and Cyber Security team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in identifying vulnerabilities and working closely with various teams to remediate security issues, ensuring the protection of our organisation's digital assets. This role requires a proactive individual with a strong understanding of cyber security principles and practices.

The Cyber Security Analyst will independently assess the adequacy and integrity of controls in information processing systems, including hardware, software solutions, information management systems, security systems, and tools. The role involves structured analysis of risks to business objectives, ensuring effective use of technology to improve delivery and internal effectiveness. The analyst will manage and provide expert advice on the selection, design, implementation, and operation of information security controls and strategies to maintain confidentiality, integrity, availability, accountability, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough vulnerability assessments and penetration testing to identify security risks and weaknesses.
  • Collaborate with IT and other departments to implement effective security measures and remediate identified vulnerabilities.
  • Monitor and analyse security alerts from various sources, including network traffic, endpoint detections, and threat intelligence feeds.
  • Investigate and respond to security incidents, including malware infections, phishing attempts, and unauthorised access.
  • Maintain and update security policies, procedures, and documentation.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to the IT Compliance and Security Team.
  • Keep a log of all decisions, actions, findings, and detections during security incidents.
  • Communicate with external contacts to support the resolution of security incidents.

Requirements for the role:

  • Bachelor's degree in Cyber Security, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications such as CISSP, CEH, or CompTIA Security+.
  • Proven experience in cyber security analysis, incident response, and threat detection.
  • Strong knowledge of security tools and technologies, including SIEM, EDR, and firewalls.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with endpoint security and identity protection solutions.
  • Experience with cloud security, specifically Microsoft Office 365 and Azure.
  • Familiarity with mobile device management (MDM) policies and rollout.
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulatory requirements in the cyber security domain.

This is a hybrid role and you will be required to be onsite for 2 days per week (Tuesday/Thursday).

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
