Postdoctoral Research Associate in Probe Microscopy of 2D Nanomaterials

UCL - Department of Chemistry

Location: London
Salary: £44,480 to £51,860
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 23rd April 2025
Closes: 20th May 2025
Job Ref: B04-06050

Applications are invited for a PDRA in Probe Microscopy of 2D Nanomaterials, to work in the group of Adam Clancy in the Department of Chemistry at University College London. The research involves exfoliating and characterising 2D materials and quasi-1D nanoribbons using photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM). The postholder will synthesise samples, undertake PiFM measurements and analysis, as well as supplement with classic nanomaterials characterisation approaches (Raman, TEM, XPS). The appointee will play a leading role in the research team, including supervising and training existing group members (PhD and Masters students) and monitoring lab safety.

The appointee will be primarily based at UCL where the candidate will join Adam Clancy’s research team in the Department of Chemistry at the Bloomsbury Campus. Approximately 1/3 of the project time will be spent at Cardiff University undertaking PiFM measurements, and travel/accommodation for these sojourns will be provided. There they will work closely with the group of Prof Phil Davies in the School of Chemistry.

Appointment at Grade 7 (£44,480 - £51,860 pa including London Allowance) is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD. Where applicants have not been awarded a PhD, appointment will be made at Research Assistant UCL Grade 6B (£38,607 - £41,255 pa including London Allowance) and payment at UCL Grade 7 salary will be backdated to the date of submission of the PhD thesis (including corrections).

The successful candidate will have a PhD degree (or be about to be awarded a PhD) in an area of Chemistry, Materials, Condensed Mater Physics, or related discipline. Hands-on experience with probe microscopy (AFM, STM, TERS, or similar) of 2D materials is a key requirement, ideally with experience of mechanical exfoliation of layered crystals for AFM samples. They will be required to work in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team and have effective written and verbal communication skills in English. As approximately 1/3 of the project time will be spent at Cardiff University, the postholder must be prepared to travel to and sojourn in Cardiff.
