University Professorship of Machine Learning for Engineering

In the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology the following professorship is to be filled at the earliest possible date:

W2 University Professorship (F/M/D) of Machine Learning for Engineering with tenure track to W3 

The appointment will be for an initial period of five years as a temporary civil servant. After a successful final evaluation, a lifetime professorship is assured. 

The professorship will focus on machine learning methods that consider the specific structure of data in engineering applications. We welcome applications in all areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related fields, including but not limited to:

  • Advanced Energy Systems Optimization and Management
  • Next-Generation Signal Processing and Communications
  • Embedded AI in IoT and Cyber-Physical Systems, Robotics
  • AI-supported system design and optimization
  • AI in Healthcare Technology
  • Neuromorphic systems

or other electrical engineering domains. 

We are looking for a candidate who conducts cutting-edge research on advanced information engineering methods that leverage the data structure of specifically engineering applications. The ideal candidate will have a distinguished research record demonstrated through international publications. Research applications should relate to electrical and information engineering fields, such as communications engineering, control engineering, signal, image, or speech processing. Connections to the faculty’s research priorities are desirable and advantageous. 

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes within the Department of Electrical Engineering, particularly in foundational engineering courses. Experience in securing third-party funding and relevant industrial experience is advantageous but not mandatory. 

With 15 interdisciplinary research institutions and participation in 8 collaborative research centres (5 in spokesperson function), 6 DFG research groups, 8 graduate colleges and 14 DFG priority programmes, Paderborn University is the ideal environment for implementing bold research ideas. As the location of a national high-performance computing centre, the university offers outstanding computing resources to implement these ideas. 

Recruitment requirements: § 36 Abs. 1 Ziff. 1 to 4 HG NRW HG NRW (University law of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia) (completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude, Ph.D. degree and additional academic achievements).
