About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.
About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Beamline Scientist or Senior Beamline Scientist to join Diamond’s I21 RIXS team.
I21 is a dedicated Resonant Inelastic soft X-ray Scattering (RIXS) beamline that provides a highly monochromatized, focused and tuneable X-ray beam onto materials, while detecting and energy-analysing scattered X-rays using a spatially-resolved two-dimensional detector.
This role has responsibility for collaborating with the Principal Beamline Scientist for the commissioning and operation of the beamline. You will also work closely with other scientists and support groups within Diamond to ensure smooth operation of the beamline, providing beam time to the scientific user community.
In addition, you will participate in the beamline inhouse curriculum and develop your own independent research programme.
Further responsibilities will include:
You will need to be available to travel occasionally within the UK and abroad, including some overnight stays, and work flexibly with occasional weekend and out of hours working during peak times.
Applicants will be considered at either Beamline Scientist or Senior Beamline Scientist level, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.
About You
You will have an appropriate first degree, along with a PhD/Second degree in physics or materials science or a related discipline.
You will demonstrate knowledge / experience of:
You should also have developed an independent research programme and have a successful scientific publication record.
You will also have knowledge / experience in at least one of the following areas:
For consideration at the senior level, you will have experience in beamline design, construction, commissioning and operation, Project Management, and Programming skills in Python or a similar language.
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
The closing date for applications is 11th May.
