About the role
This is an apprenticeship role within the University of Sussex’s Health and Safety Team, which supports the university in delivering a safe environment to work, research, visit and enjoy, based at the Falmer Campus (over 150 acres) and a range of off-site locations. The Health and Safety Team’s key purpose is to promote and improve the safety culture and support safety compliance across the University. As an Apprentice Fire Safety Advisor you will support us in this work, with a focus on fire safety.
This is a hybrid apprenticeship program consisting of on-the-job training and online learning. Learning will take place via a learning platform, which includes self-study and classroom-delivered content. Learning and study time will be at least 6 hours per week and delivered flexibly across the working week and will include some blocks of week-long classroom learning delivered remotely, to maximise your development. At interview stage, your availability to attend these week-long blocks of learning will be discussed.
About you
As you progress through the apprenticeship, you will be supported by the University Fire Safety Officer before working independently to provide advice and guidance, conduct investigations, undertake fire risk assessment reviews/inspections, produce reports and health and safety policies and guidance.
Your key function in this post will be to provide an excellent standard of professional fire safety advice/guidance to University Faculties and Divisions. In addition to this you will be expected to perform other tasks as called upon by the Head of Health and Safety, including some distinct project work in support of the core departmental goal of promoting a safe working culture.
The role offers great potential for an enthusiastic and innovative health and safety professional to make a substantial, lasting impact, working in collaboration with a team of other safety professionals. You will have the know-how to advise on a wide range of fire safety issues and be confident in applying this in an academic environment. Of key importance will be your ability to build a rapport with the full spectrum of staff and students.
